In 2016, I co-founded an NGO called OutChina
to provide
a visual document of China's LGBTQ community. We use various digital tools to create and share stories about the life experiences of China's LGBTQ community with the
entire
world.

Among
the 100+ stories
we have produced so far, this educational film, which I fully designed and animated, stands out with nearly half a million views on YouTube alone.

China has the world's largest population, 1.3 billion. With an estimated 70 million LGBT population, China has the largest LGBT community in the world. Unfortunately, an estimated 70% of Chinese gay men are in a heterosexual marriage.
Why?

Our Findings in Research
- LGBT people in China face legal and social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents.
- Same-sex couples in China are unable to marry or adopt.
- Laws do not include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
- Only 5% of China's LGBT citizens have come out of the closet, and the
main reason they conceal their gay identities from their families is fear of
rejection.
-
The unwillingness of gay men in China to practice safe sex or disclose they have HIV are big factors in the rapid growth in HIV infection rates in the country.
- Many Chinese textbooks still identify homosexuality as a mental illness.

How might we help individuals gain confidence, break the invisible wall, and join the community?
From the beginning of the design thinking process, I started brainstorming, card sorting, and ideating with a ton of sketches. Basically, I draw hundreds of drafts in the first round.

I have always been inspired and motivated by real-life stories on social media. I collect ideas from our everyday lives and transform them into extraordinary animated content.

Another good example showing how I visualize a compelling story based on an actual historical event.

Impact
The video has gone viral since published. Many people have shown their love and support by leaving positive reviews. I believe that by doing little things to push the gay movement forward, the world will become better and more accepting of the LGBT community.
